What high Urine Specific Gravity can mean
- Concentrated urine from dehydration, fluid restriction, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, fever, or other fluid loss
- Glucose or protein in urine, which can raise specific gravity independently of hydration
- Recent intravenous contrast or certain medicines and infusions, which can interfere with or increase the measured value
- Less commonly, disorders associated with water retention or reduced effective circulation; interpretation depends on blood sodium, symptoms, and other tests
What low Urine Specific Gravity can mean
- Dilute urine after drinking a large amount of fluid, which is common and often temporary
- Use of diuretics or other factors that increase water excretion
- Diabetes insipidus when urine remains inappropriately dilute despite thirst, high blood sodium, or dehydration
- Reduced kidney concentrating ability from tubular injury or kidney disease when a low value persists
- A single low random result does not diagnose a kidney or hormone disorder
What to do about an abnormal result
- Interpret a single result in light of how much you drank, recent fluid losses, medicines, intravenous contrast, and glucose or protein elsewhere on the urinalysis.
- Do not deliberately restrict water or overhydrate to change the number unless a healthcare provider has given specific test-preparation instructions.
- If an abnormal value persists or does not fit your hydration status, a clinician may repeat a first-morning sample or order urine osmolality, blood sodium, glucose, creatinine, and other tests of water balance and kidney function.
- Seek prompt care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very low urine output, or symptoms of severe dehydration rather than relying on specific gravity alone.
