Urine pH: Normal Range & What High or Low pH Means

Also known as: Urine pH test, pH of urine, normal urine pH

Urine pH measures how acidic or alkaline your urine is on a scale of 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline), and it's part of a routine urinalysis. A normal urine pH ranges from about 4.5 to 8, with most people's urine falling around 6; this normal range is the same for men and women. Diet, hydration, medications, and certain infections can shift urine pH, and a persistently unusual pH is generally interpreted by a clinician alongside your symptoms and other urinalysis findings.

Urine pH normal range

CategoryRange (pH)
Normal range4.5–8.0Reference ranges vary by lab; typical value is around 6
Low (acidic)< 4.5–5.0
High (alkaline)> 8.0

Reference ranges vary by laboratory. Use the range printed on your own report as the definitive comparison.

What high Urine pH can mean

  • A vegetarian or plant-heavy diet
  • A urinary tract infection with urea-splitting bacteria (such as Proteus species)
  • Certain kidney conditions, including some forms of kidney stones
  • Vomiting or certain medications, including some diuretics

What low Urine pH can mean

  • A high-protein or high-meat diet
  • Diabetes-related ketoacidosis or uncontrolled diabetes
  • Dehydration
  • Certain kidney stone types that form in more acidic urine (such as uric acid stones)

What to do about an abnormal result

  • Compare your value to the reference range on your own report — urine pH normally shifts with diet and hydration throughout the day.
  • A single unusual urine pH is often not significant; your doctor looks for a consistent pattern along with symptoms.
  • If you form kidney stones, your doctor may use urine pH to guide dietary or medical changes, since certain stone types form more easily at specific pH levels.
  • Don't self-diagnose from one number — urine pH is interpreted alongside the rest of your urinalysis and clinical picture.

Frequently asked questions

What does a high pH in urine mean?

A high (alkaline) urine pH is often simply related to a plant-heavy diet, but it can also occur with a urinary tract infection caused by certain urea-splitting bacteria, or with some kidney conditions and kidney stone types. A single high reading is usually not concerning on its own and is interpreted alongside your symptoms and the rest of your urinalysis.

What is the normal pH of urine in females?

The normal urine pH range is the same for everyone regardless of sex — roughly 4.5 to 8, with most people's urine sitting around 6. Diet, hydration, and time of day can shift the number, so a single value outside the typical range isn't automatically a concern.
