Squamous epithelial cells are flat surface cells that can enter urine from the distal urethra or external genital area during collection. What high Squamous Epithelial Cells can mean
- Contamination during collection is the most common interpretation, particularly when a midstream clean-catch technique was not followed
- Cells may come from the distal urethra, vulva, or nearby skin rather than from the bladder or kidneys
- A contaminated specimen can make bacteria and other urinalysis findings less reliable and may need to be repeated
- Urinary symptoms, white blood cells, blood, nitrites, or a positive culture can still matter even when squamous cells suggest contamination
- Squamous epithelial cells should not be confused with renal tubular epithelial cells, which have a different clinical interpretation
