What Is CK in a Blood Test? Creatine Kinase Range & High Levels

Also known as: Creatine kinase, CPK, creatine phosphokinase, CK blood test

CK (creatine kinase, sometimes called CPK) is an enzyme found mainly in your skeletal muscles, heart, and brain. When muscle tissue is stressed or damaged, CK leaks into the blood, so the test is used to detect muscle injury. A normal CK level is roughly 20–200 U/L; high CK most often reflects intense exercise or muscle strain, but can also signal muscle disease or, less commonly, heart injury.

CK normal range

CategoryRange (U/L)
Normal (men)40–200 U/LMen run higher due to muscle mass
Normal (women)30–150 U/L
Mildly elevated200–1,000 U/LOften exercise or minor injury
Markedly elevated> 5,000 U/LConcern for rhabdomyolysis

Reference ranges vary by laboratory. Use the range printed on your own report as the definitive comparison.

What high CK can mean

  • Strenuous exercise (a very common, harmless cause)
  • Muscle injury or trauma
  • Rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown)
  • Statin-related muscle effects
  • Heart muscle injury (less common; troponin is preferred for this)

What low CK can mean

  • Low CK is generally not a concern
  • Can occur with low muscle mass or early pregnancy

What to do about an abnormal result

  • Avoid heavy exercise for 2–3 days before testing to prevent a falsely high reading.
  • Very high CK with dark urine or severe muscle pain needs urgent medical attention.
  • If you take a statin and have muscle aches, ask your doctor whether to check CK.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dangerously high CK level?

CK levels above about 5,000 U/L raise concern for rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition where muscle breakdown can harm the kidneys. Values this high — especially with muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine — require prompt medical evaluation.

Can exercise raise CK?

Yes, significantly. Intense or unfamiliar exercise is one of the most common reasons for a mildly to moderately elevated CK. Levels typically return to normal within a few days of rest, which is why testing is often repeated after avoiding exercise.
